About Lilley Deevey
Why did you decide to become an apprentice?
I attended university for a year before dropping out and looking for an alternative. I didn't want to miss out on gaining qualifications but the university lifestyle didn't suit me. An apprenticeship seemed like the perfect mix of gaining a qualification but also getting paid, and gaining experience on the job.
How did you find out about apprenticeships?
I was given little careers advice in schools and stumbled across my apprenticeship on the Gov.uk find an apprenticeship search tool. I didn't know anything about apprenticeships or anyone who had done one before but I took a leap of faith and it was the best decision I ever made.
What was the apprenticeship application / recruitment process like?
My application process with AstraZeneca was really nerve-wracking but exciting! I submitted my CV and a cover letter through the government's system then a full day assessment centre. The centre looked at your attention to detail, team working skills, interest in the business and your previous work experience. It was a very long day but it gave me the chance to ask lots of questions and really get a feel for if the company was right for me!
What is the best thing about being an apprentice?
The best thing about being an apprentice is that the opportunities to progress are endless!
What would you advise someone considering an apprenticeship?
Try to find an organisation who's values and culture you feel are a good fit with your own, and don't worry about what specific job you want to do at the end of the apprenticeship, you might find that your perfect role is something you've never even heard of yet! But most importantly take every opportunity that is given to you, you never know where it might lead.
