About Lois McClure
Why did you decide to become an apprentice?
I became an Apprentice because I knew that University wasn't the right route for me. I wanted to get stuck in the world of work but also wanted to develop my skills and qualifications at the same time.
How did you find out about apprenticeships?
I found out about Apprenticeships from my Uncle who worked for the Co-operative Bank at the time.
What was the apprenticeship application / recruitment process like?
It was a tough process, I had to fill in an application form online, then I had a telephone interview, then an interview with the training provider and then a final interview at the Co-op Head Office.
What is the best thing about being an apprentice?
I'm not an Apprentice anymore, but the best thing for me was being allowed to develop myself at my own pace and slowly build up the trust and responsibility with my employer. As an apprentice you aren't expected to know everything but you need to be keen to learn and get involved in as much as you can.
What would you advise someone considering an apprenticeship?
I would advise them to look at all the Apprenticeship frameworks out there and see which one might be suited to them. Also to do a lot of research of the sector they are interested in and research employers that are known to be great for apprenticeships in that area. It's important to know what business you want to work for and know that there is clear career progression.
